First, on the December 1-2-3 weekend, I’ll be finally premiering my classical piano program “Crossroads” that I had intended to play a year ago but had to postpone due to illness. The feature piece on the program is a piano transcription of the orchestral music of the first movement of Mahler’s Ninth Symphony, my all-time favorite piece by Mahler that I have been deeply in love with since my teenage years. It’s a remarkable big-canvas journey approaching a half-hour in length and will certainly be a challenge for me to perform, but hey, giving yourself challenges is the only way you ever grow. To give myself a bit of a break, though, the other pieces on this program are ones I have been performing here and there over the last two years, but sometimes nice things happen when you after a gap in time bring back on a program a piece of music you’ve played before, as you come up with fresh ideas and develop a deeper familiarity with the music. Certainly I absolutely love every piece on this program and very much hope you’ll take the time to come to one of my performances and join me as I share this wonderful music.<o:p></o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:"Times New Roman",serif'><o:p> </o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:"Times New Roman",serif'>I’ve listed the date/time/place info for my various concerts below and wanted to mention just one more thing. If you know of any jazz music lover that might be willing to host a house concert for my jazz group on one of my open dates in the states of New Hampshire, Maine, Massachusetts, or Vermont, that would be fantastic as the other musicians playing with me held certain dates for me but I wasn’t very successful trying the usual live music spots in these states, so I really think the best option if possible would be to find someone willing to organize a private house concert for me. I have availability for a duo jazz concert with Clyde Stats on upright bass on Thursday, December 7 or a trio with Clyde and Keith Gibson on drums on either Saturday, December 9 or Sunday, December 10. The centrepiece of the program is a piano transcription of the first movement of Mahler’s celebrated Ninth Symphony, universally recognized as one of the greatest symphony movements of all time, expressing Mahler’s feelings on the earth, nature, and death. Highlights of the program include two pieces by the present-day Ukrainian composer Victoria Poleva, whose absorbing and soulful music Michael Arnowitt has been trying to raise appreciation of in Canada and the United States, and a set of the wonderfully creative piano pieces of the early 20th century composer Arthur Lourié, whose forgotten music has only just been receiving attention from performers in recent years. They will perform jazz classics by Herbie Hancock, Pat Metheny, and Bill Evans, along with Michael Arnowitt’s versions of jazz standards such as There Will Never Be Another You and Autumn Leaves.
