Director Evan Premo (bass/composer), Mary Bonhag (soprano), and acclaimed
guest artists Owen Dalby (violin), Meena Bhasin (viola), Carol McGonnell
(clarinet), and James Austin Smith (oboe). “Trapeze” will have three
concerts on Friday, May 18 at 7:30 pm at the Green Mountain Girls Farm (923
Loop Road, Northfield, VT
<https://maps.google.com/?q=923+Loop+Road,+Northfield,+VT&entry=gmail&source=g>),
Saturday, May 19 at 7:30 pm at the Unitarian Church of Montpelier (130 Main
Street, Montpelier, VT) and on Sunday, May 20 at 4 pm at the Warren United
Church (339 Main Street, Warren, VT). Admission is “Come as you are. Pay
what you can.”

This series features an eclectic line-up of fun and athletically virtuosic
music selections mirroring the awe-inspiring acts one would find at the
circus. The program, titled “Trapeze,” was curated by Premo and Bonhag
around Sergei Prokofiev’s *Quintet in G minor, Op. 39 “Trapeze” for Oboe,
Clarinet, Violin, Viola, and Double Bass *written in 1924 for a ballet
inspired by the players at the circus. To compliment the Prokofiev, the
program also includes: Georges Aperghis’ *280 Measures* for solo clarinet;
Samuel Barber’s *Opus 25 “Nuvoletta”* with words by James Joyce from *Finnegans
Wake*, originally scored for piano and soprano but arranged by Premo for
this concert for soprano and ensemble; Luciano Berio’s *Sequenza** III* *for
voice*; Iva Bittová’s *Hoboj* and *Divná slečinka* for viola and oboe; and Evan
Premo’s *Lullaby *and* Polska* for violin and viola.

Of this concert, co-Artistic Director Bonhag says, “What images or words
are evoked when we think ‘circus’? Certainly entertaining, physical feats
of bravery, strength, and flexibility, silliness and humor, as well as
artists stretching themselves beyond what seems possible. In this program
we use the Prokofiev Quintet, which is literally related to the circus, as
a launching point to explore these themes in musical terms. We welcome
audiences to enter into the space from a place of joy and curiosity to find
an appreciation in the zaniness of the sounds and timbres that are
presented and labeled as ‘music.’”

Beyond the musical notes, each concert will give a nod to the circus with
other various festive enhancements. For more information visit: http://www.
