Thank you Bronwyn, Beth, Donia, Lani, and others for navigating ways to sing in spite of the pandemic. I love singing, but at this point I’m still isolating as much as possible so I can see my infant grandson and support my partner who has a compromised immune system. Nonetheless, your continual agitation for vocal harmony gives me hope.

Thank you, Dick, for sharing the Wells-Riley equation—how timely! As a mathematician, I appreciate seeing a delineation of factors involved in the spread of airborne droplets. You are clearly proud of your father and uncle, and I hope they are proud of you also. I am not aware of your full resume, but I know what has occurred for me during our time together.

My experience in choruses suggests that many directors have an obsessive-compulsive relationship with pitch. That is, they don’t want the pitch to sag; they incessantly nag about singing the note a bit sharper, until magically the chorus seems to get it right—without my being able to hear any discernible difference.

What’s happened for me during my two years in the UCM choir is that I have begun to hear the difference. First, I began to recognize the consonance in rehearsal when you said we finally nailed the pitch. Then came a time when we were singing in church, we nailed the pitch, and I recognized it all by myself without being told. Wow! What a high. Thank you!

I love teaching math to children—in person—so I identify with your desire for more than virtual choral directing. My son, a physical trainer, said that he would have never chosen this career if his sessions had to be done through SKYPE or ZOOM. He thrives on the direct contact, as do we all.

I hope that all of us are able to soon resume face-to-face contact with our students/clients/singers.

Peace, joy, and hope,

Tom
