Subject: I'll be playing jazz at Hugo's in Montpelier Friday night

Friends,

Very last-minute, but I was just given a gig to play jazz piano music at Hugo’s in Montpelier Friday night. To my surprise, Hugo’s has moved because its original space never came back after last summer’s flood, but it moved to a familiar location: 44 Main Street, across from City Hall and the former location of the Black Door (and even before that, Julio’s if you have lived in the area that long). I will be performing in the dedicated third floor space. Dining is available on the second floor for sure ... I am guessing probably there is only drinks service on the third floor, so if you want to eat and see me play music, come early enough to do so as I will begin the music at 7:30 pm.

Here is the details and a little blurb describing what I anticipate playing, although, with jazz, set lists sometimes get altered according to mood, requests, and so forth:

Friday, June 28

7:30 pm

Hugo’s

44 Main Street, Montpelier, Vermont

Michael Arnowitt, piano

Vermont favorite Michael Arnowitt returns to Montpelier to present a colorful and diverse program of jazz past and present. Michael will perform jazz standards such as You Must Believe In Spring (Michel Le Grand), The Peacocks (Jimmy Rowles), and Sophisticated Lady (Duke Ellington), and, from the great mid-century of jazz, he’ll perform improvs on lively tunes by Cedar Walton (Bolivia), Wes Montgomery (So Do It!), Horace Silver (The Baghdad Blues), plus music by Clifford Brown, Herbie Hancock, and Bill Evans. From his most recent jazz album “Sweet Spontaneous” he will offer some of his own jazz compositions well-liked by local audiences such as Pirouette and Elegy for Richard. Michael will also be presenting the Montpelier premiere of a new set of jazz arrangements he’s making based on Bartok’s Six Roumanian Dances, vibrant and highly enjoyable pieces originally written by the Hungarian composer for violin and piano but transformed by Michael into the language of jazz.

There is no cover but as the pay is unfortunately as in so many places in Vermont stuck at 1970’s levels, it would be fantastic if you come if you would bring a little cash and donate a tip to me at the show. Of course this is not a concert but just a casual jazz gig so feel free to come and go depending on what you can do.

As this was arranged fairly last-minute, it would be great if some of my Montpelier area friends could come and cheer me on. Hope to see a few of you there!

- Michael
