When I attended the October 2nd meeting of the "Team of Chairs," our prompt was, "Why are you involved with this "committee"?  What do you get out of it?"

Here is what I shared:

"Singing is intrinsically pleasing, and learning new songs feeds my soul.  The breathing and the singular focus on producing pleasing sounds takes my attention away from the chaos of living.  Singing leads to a sense of peace and calm.

"Singing with others in unison and/or in harmony is literally caressing each other with our voices, and the resonance in our upper bodies feels like hugging.

"Singing is worship.  There are messages in the songs we sing, and it is gratifying for the choir to offer our celebration of music to the congregants."

I stand behind my choice to sing, and you can use my name.

2 requests for some help:

First, I want to put something in the e-news to try to recruit some new choir members.  I thought it might be more meaningful to have a statement from an actual choir member that both says what you get out of participating, and possibly, as appropriate from your personal perspective, that addresses what people might see as obstacles to joining.  The 2 big ones that I see are the time commitment and feeling that they aren't good enough singers or don't read music well enough.

I'd like to put something out now, either this or next week, and then also at the beginning of the new year, so more than one is welcome!   Let me know if you are willing to write out a short paragraph, or just send one along.  And say whether you are willing to have your name attached to it.

Second, John Poeten has requested us to "sponsor" a themed basket to raffle off at the holiday fair.   I would imagine it might include things like small musical instruments--percussion, whistles or flutes, etc, maybe some music or music books, cd's (if anyone listens to those anymore), music related art or jewelry.  Would anyone be willing to actually create/decorate the basket, and do folks have things they could contribute?
