*Ansel, could you please share with the Social Responsibility Committee?*
*From George's Facebook page:** As most of you probably know already I am
going to be celebrating my 80th by bicycling the 185-mile-long C&O Canal
from Cumberland, MD, to Washington, D.C. We will start on April 22 or 23.
The goal is to end up in Washington before Saturday the 29th so we can be
there in time for the People’s Climate March. I will be doing this ride
with Lance Polya, fellow UU and former adjunct professor of systems
thinking at UVM. My daughter Sharon, husband Mark, an**d two-year-old
daughter Siena may also be joining us. We also welcome anyone else-the more
the merrier. *
Hi, SRC Folks. When I heard about this, I started wondering if George's
ride might make a good fundraising focus for some UU environmental project,
through GoFundMe or Kickstarter. When I asked George, he thought that
something like solar panels to help provide clean energy for our UU Church
might be a worthy goal (or whatever would fit into the current building
plan). I could imagine financial donations from 1 cent a mile from kids,
or ten cents, up to a dollar a mile would work (for the 185 miles or the
round trip of 370 miles) --with donated rewards at the higher levels from
church members (in the form of food, services, etc.). One award could be
participation in a special CCC (Climate Change Committee) with George to
decide where best to invest the money collected.
The trouble is, aside from having the idea, I have no skills,
technical, geographical or financial to contribute to this project. So I'm
sending this out to see if any of you do, as well as the time and
commitment to turn this idea into reality. If George is willing to bike
370 miles on behalf of environmental stewardship, is anybody out there able
to help turn that action into a longterm investment in a green future? If
a fundraising site seems too much trouble, maybe there's an easier way to
do it.
Margaret
