But first, I want to acknowledge how much Hedi Ballantyne did to further the causes of justice in our community.? I know I am not alone in attributing my involvement in UCM to Hedi's encouragement and she will be missed by so many people in our community.? I knew her for a brief 3 years and I will miss her a lot. As many of you know, Montpelier High School has been flying the Black Lives Matter flag as a show of solidarity with its students. The publicity of this decision has led to a surge of abusive, racist phone calls that administrative staff have had to deal with.? A parent suggested that community folks might take a moment to express support for the staff, by calling or sending a note to the high school. Lastly, THIS FRIDAY, the Senate Committee on Government Operations will discuss S.281, Equity Commission for Mitigation of Systemic Racism.? Please call now to express your support and to ask that the bill be "voted out of Senate Operations."? You can also write your support on: vermont-senate-government-operations at googlegroups.com For more information on this bill and the Fair and Impartial Policing Policy, visit the Racial Justice Reform Coalition Thank you all and Peace, Ansel -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... It was standing room only during testimony on the Fair and Impartial Policing Policy, Act 54 and S.281 in Room 10 on January 24th. We collectively delivered testimony, asking legislators for a directed effort and commitment to address systemic racism for the first time in Vermont history. The following day roughly 40 people attended Systemic Awareness Day, which included advocacy training, a Coalition Meeting, a press conference and mixer and a film viewing and panel discussion. In our coalition meeting we discussed ideas and ways in which the Coalition will be transforming, one of which is the time and frequency of our meetings. Our next meeting will therefore be Thursday, February 8th at 2:00 at Green Mountain Self Advocates. *Finally, on Friday, February 2nd, at 3:00 PM in room 4 at the Statehouse, Senate Committee on Government Operations will have a discussion on the S.281, Equity Commission for Mitigation of Systemic Racism. * Senators will review and discuss testimonies and relevant documents that they have received. It will not be a hearing so there no testimony will be taken. PLEASE submit all statements and testimony NOW !
