Could you offer a temporary home to an asylum seeker?

Since October of 2019, the Asylum Seekers Assistance Network of Montpelier
has hosted a family of four from South America, asylum seekers who were
forced to flee their home country, and hope to be granted permanent
residency in the US. Our many volunteers have provided housing, financial
support, transportation, language interpretation, legal assistance, medical
care, educational support, job training, and friendship to this wonderful
family. The family is thriving and moving towards independence.

Now ASAN (a project of the Central Vermont Refugee Action Network) is
preparing to sponsor additional asylum seekers, with the goal of getting
people released from federal detention. (When people present themselves as
asylum seekers at the border, US Immigration and Customs Enforcement -ICE-
detains them, sometimes allowing them to be released to a sponsor as they
await their asylum hearing.) We are looking for hosts who could commit to
housing an individual, a parent and child, or a family for at least 6
months. CVRAN will provide official sponsorship and pay all expenses. ASAN
volunteers will take care of all other needs. As hosts, you can be actively
involved in a guest’s life, or just provide a living space, depending on
what best suits your circumstances.

Asylum seekers are in the country legally. Upon release from detention,
individuals quarantine before coming to Vermont, and again when they arrive
in the state. Upon testing negative for COVID 19, they join their host
families.

If providing a home to an asylum seeker interests you, and you would like
to explore the possibility further, please email us at cvran910 at gmail.com or
call Diane Fitch at 937 344 3100 or Pam Walker at 802 917 4763. Together,
we can make a vital difference in the lives of people who deserve the
opportunity to live in peace and security. We can show that Americans care.

Thank you so much for considering this proposal.

With warm regards,

Steering Committee
